Although the market is open to the public Monday through Saturday every week from 6:00am to 6:00pm, Saturdays and to a lesser extent Fridays remain the busiest market days. Nevertheless one can purchase fresh supplies of most fruits and vegetables at very reasonable prices on any given day. In recent times however, Friday evening market has grown in popularity as farmers and vendors assemble from about 3:00 pm in an attempt to secure the premiere vending spots outlining the River Bank, Bayfront and Hanover Street. Even Thursday evenings are beginning to take on a similar pattern as farmers and vendors from miles away prepare for the Friday market.

The NRM offers a wide range of services to both vendors and patrons. In addition to the open grounds where most of the fresh produce is merchandized, the market features a network of booths, shops, mobile units and stalls in the covered section where dried goods and other marketable commodities are sold. Products include prepared foods, groceries, handicraft, household items, textiles and pharmaceuticals. Limited packing is available on most days and patrons can still enjoy a market experience that spans over 150 years of history. Rental rates for "space" are among the lowest in the city allowing any enterprising farmer, vendor or business owner to land a viable and profitable business.
