DEXIA successfully hosts post-harvest workshop
USAID funded Caribbean Trade Expansion Project
Over twenty-five farmers including extension officers and fresh food processors took part in the one-day USAID funded Caribbean Trade Expansion Project (CTEP) workshop. Ronald Pilgrim, post harvest specialist at CARDI delivered presentations on postharvest handling and quality assurance for hot peppers and dasheen while Drs. Samuel Scott and Magid Dagher both of the North-South Institute (NSI) presented on Value-Chain Export Out-Turns for Marketing and (NSI) Risk Management Mitigation for hot peppers.
“This is an important refresher’s course for most of us” said an outspoken dasheen farmer, “but we are also learning some new bits of information especially as it relates to the requirements of specific markets.” The farmers also expressed keen appreciation for the opportunity to have interacted one-on-one with Noel Hoilet of NRH Enterprises, one of the US buyers
and
distributors under the CTEP programme.
He reviewed his long-standing trade and business relations with DEXIA
and reassured the group of his company’s commitment to do business with
them.
Theodora Anthony, Export Readiness Officer at DEXIA said she was pleased with the turn-out and active participation of the farmers. “It does wonders for the confidence of the farmers” she said “to see all the players involved in this project rally around the farmers for a session like this.”
The workshop, which formed part of the enterprise and resource development component of CTEP, was held at the conference room of the Public Service Union on December 5, 2007. It was jointly funded by the USAID, NSI, CARDI and the DEXIA.
