Dasheen and hot pepper farmers, since 2007, have been given the opportunity to export container loads of dasheen and hot peppers to the US under DEXIA’s USAID-sponsored Caribbean Trade and Expansion Programme (CTEP).

Dominica can now boast of having its own National Export Strategy (NES). Consultant Lucilla Lewis completed work on the design and development phase of the NES in June.

Vending of marketable commodities along the city streets and sidewalks of Roseau remains a perennial problem. Notwithstanding the joint actions of the New Roseau Market Authority, and the Police to clear the streets of the illegal activity, the voluntary wholesale return of vendors to the Roseau Market has not happened.

The Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA) in collaboration with the North-South Institute (NSI), USAID, the Caribbean Trade Expansion Project and the Global Strategy Group Inc. will host a two-day Agri-Enterprise Investment Profiles and Export Opportunities Workshop for Small Farmers on Monday 19th May and Tuesday 20th May 2008 at the St Gerard’s Hall.

Two local craft enterprises are among eight in the region slated to benefit from the ongoing Caribbean Giftware Sector Support Programme (CGSSP). The Caribbean Export / Trade Facilitation Office of Canada-sponsored project is designed to assist regional craft enterprises with product development and access to the Canadian and international markets. Participants at the workshop on Post-harvest Handling, Quality Assurance and Value-Chain Export-Out Turns say they are now in a better position to produce and deliver quality produce for the export market. Over twenty-five farmers including extension officers and fresh food processors took part in the one-day USAID funded Caribbean Trade Expansion Project (CTEP) workshop.
