National Export Strategy for Dominica
The participation of a wide cross-section of private and public sector stakeholders in a consultative meeting held at DEXIA on Nov 17, 2006 to establish the foundation to design a National Export Strategy for Dominica is very encouraging.
We can never over-emphasize the importance of this collaborative approach in the design of our National Export Strategy (NES). The NES will assist us to focus our exports on priority markets with high penetration potential. As a tool the NES will also assist us in achieving the medium-term goals outlined in the Growth and Social Protection Strategy document.
We also know that the issue of competitiveness is central to the effective implementation of any National Export Strategy. We cannot achieve success in exports if our industries and key sectors are uncompetitive. We need to find creative ways based on the International Trade Centre template and value chain analysis to create our own competitive advantages. We need to ask ourselves the critical question: How can we use the Nature Island image to create our own competitive advantage?
The consultative meeting creates the foundation for all the key stakeholders to influence the direction of exports. The process has just started and will be officially launched in the first quarter of 2007.We are looking forward to an active period of engagement after the official launch.
Both the International Trade Centre and the Commonwealth Secretariat
are collaborating with DEXIA on this project.
